A lasting power of attorney (LPA) is a new legal tool. It permits a person to arrange in advance the management of his or her affairs, if and when his or her decision-making ability will be weakened due to aging, injury or disease.

A regular power of attorney expires in case the appointing person becomes legally incompetent. A person equipped with a continuing power of attorney is able to determine who will manage his or her personal, medical, and property matters, when he or she will become incapable of making decisions, how his or her affairs will be managed, and what supervision or reporting will apply to these acts. Thus, the person can plan the course of their life also after losing the ability to make decisions.

This preparation may prevent disagreements and controversies among family members. Moreover, It enables efficient handling without the bother associated with guardianship, which requires applications to court and ongoing submission of financial reports to the Administrator General.
